There were around twelve major security hacking incidents that occurred in a week which caused crypto losses of around USD 6.4 million or the equivalent of IDR 98.2 billion (assuming an exchange rate of IDR 15,357 per US dollar).

Reporting from Coinmarketcap, Tuesday (26/9/2023), according to web3 security company CertiK, this loss was caused by crypto hacks and phishing attacks via Discord and X (formerly known as Twitter). Social media has recently been flooded with fake airdrop offers from scammers.

Several users have been tweeting channels and a popular Discord bot was recently hacked to spam members with token airdrop texts. In reality, these texts include phishing links, taking users to malicious domains and draining their wallets in seconds.

Airdrop scams have become very popular, and some threat actors are even using deepfakes or AI-generated videos to make these scams more convincing.

Last week, TikTok was flooded with fake Elon Musk Bitcoin scams. The scammers included a fake video of Musk giving an interview with Fox News, with the Tesla chief allegedly claiming to be giving away Bitcoin.

However, like most other airdrop and giveaway scams, this scam also redirects users to phishing sites. Certik also reported that phishing campaigns have become more rampant and frequent this year.

Their data shows that monthly losses due to phishing attacks had reached 136.8 million in August, double the figure in 2022.

A large number of these phishing campaigns are targeted at crypto holders and traders, driving urgency for users to be more careful with their digital assets.
