In a recent development, cybersecurity experts have uncovered a potential threat to the security of crypto assets, with up to $2.1 billion in digital currencies believed to be at risk. On November 14, Unciphered, a leading cybersecurity company, unveiled a vulnerability named “Randstorm” that affects crypto wallets generated through web browsers from 2011 to 2015.

The discovery was made while the company was working to recover a Bitcoin wallet, revealing a significant issue for wallets generated by BitcoinJS and related projects. Unciphered estimates that millions of wallets, containing around $2.1 billion in cryptocurrency assets, could be affected by this vulnerability.

The potential risk extends beyond Bitcoin, as Unciphered suggests that other cryptocurrencies like Dogecoin, Litecoin, and Zcash may also be vulnerable. The company emphasized that millions of users have already received alerts about this issue.

For those who created crypto wallets using web browsers between 2011 and 2015, Unciphered strongly advises transferring their assets to wallets generated more recently. The company issued a statement, saying:

“If you are an individual who has generated a self-custody wallet using a web browser before 2016, you should consider moving your funds to a more recently created wallet generated by trusted software.”

While Unciphered assured that not all impacted wallets are equally vulnerable, they confirmed the exploitability of the discovered vulnerability. However, to prevent aiding malicious actors, the company refrained from providing specific details about the exploitation.

This revelation comes amid the aftermath of the Poloniex hack, underlining the persistent threats faced by the crypto community. As a precautionary measure, crypto users are urged to stay vigilant, especially if they fall within the mentioned timeframe of wallet generation, and take necessary actions to secure their digital assets.
